Why antibiotics are generally ineffective in veterinary dentistry.
Antibiotics are ineffective in veterinary dentistry because dental infections are localized, and systemic antibiotics can't reach these areas in sufficient concentrations. Additionally, bacteria in dental disease form protective biofilms, making treatment harder. In this session, you'll learn why antibiotics are generally not the solution and explore alternative treatments like hyaluronic acid.
Indications for antibiotic use in veterinary dentistry. (ADA, AAHA, AVDC guidelines)
Antibiotics in veterinary dentistry are indicated only in specific cases, such as for severe infections, abscesses, or after dental surgeries. The ADA, AAHA, and AVDC guidelines highlight when antibiotics are necessary, focusing on cases where infection spreads beyond the oral cavity or poses systemic risks. You'll learn these guidelines and when antibiotic use is appropriate.
Hyaluronic acid applications
Hyaluronic acid is used in veterinary dentistry as a targeted adjunct to support periodontal treatment by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing. It can be applied locally to improve outcomes without contributing to antibiotic resistance. This session will explore its practical applications in dental care.
